In inglese esistono due termini per indicare la parola aborto: “abortion” e “miscarriage”. Il primo viene usato in relazione ad un'interruzione di gravidanza volontaria, mentre il secondo indica l'aborto spontaneo: Sfortunatamente ha avuto un aborto spontaneo, unfortunately, she had a miscarriage (non unfortunately, she had an abortion). In questo frangente, viene usata comunemente anche la locuzione to lose the baby, perdere il bambino.
